A1200 EZ-TOWER - Capacitor scare

Made a comment on one of the forums this week that they should stop
the scare mongering regarding capacitors. It really is like a stock
answer to any problem with the Amiga. What is worse is that folk
that do not know the platform are starting their experience by
having their Amiga sent away to have capacitors replaced.

Note that I have never replaced one capacitor in any of my kit.

So imagine my reaction when I opened my Amiga Eyetech tower to find
what looked like a blown capacitor. Talk about egg on face. So I
was about to be eating a whole plate of humble pie when I took the
motherboard out the tower to check.

Thing was it felt more like a blob of solder. And I couldn't understand
how it had run down the capacitor when the board stands vertical.
And then I realised that given the verticality of the board the
fluid would have needed to run vertically up and then over the top.

This board has pretty much always been in a tower during the risk
years for a burst capacitor. It has all the tell tale signs. So I
have concluded its a blob of solder. The board has been worked on
and there are component changes to the circuits. So not unusual.

Anyway, I took some video of the spaghetti so you can listen to the
drives kicking in. The board has all the EZ add-ons. PC mouse control,
external keyboard control, flicker fixer for PC monitor. The accelerator
is a BlizzardIV 030 with 32MB memory. The unit has HD floppy drive,
ZIP drive and CD drive. It also works.

There is one issue with the machine and its a gravity thing. I have to
press the ribbon connectors that hang off the buffered interface back
into place every so often and also push the accelerator back onto
the interface. She has IDE-Fix installed which I used to connect all
the IDE interfaces. She is hand built from scraps I had lying around
the workshop. The original motherboard is back with her original
case and I use in the Workshop. The PPC card that did use to sit in
the case appears broken, though I never have given up on the thing.

So there you go, a busted capacitor ... 'NOT' , in my view.
 ....... Don't have any.

Always nice to see Lara on the Amiga. Looks like
she is about to 'cap yo ass sucker'.
