Entry 26th June 2025: Post 1: Amiga 1000 - Workbench 1.0 with ABasiC.

Amiga 1000 - Workbench 1.0 with ABasiC.

Scrub what I said yesterday cus it turns out I do have the A1000
original release of Workbench 1.0. It was locked away in a very
old repository of mine in with the files I received with the
Amiga 1060 sidecar. I also have the Kick for that version but I
still don't have the Extras disk.. or didn't.

What I do have is a stand alone version of ABasiC which works
with a whole load of support drawers and files on that disk. I
also have the 'Extras' disk for V1.1 with AmigaBasic. I have a
known file structure for the 'Extras' 1.0 and that does not
indicate any of the additional files included with my stand-
alone ABasiC disk. So the question is .. what happens if I simply
delete AmigaBasic from the 1.1 disk and replace it with ABasiC
thus magically transforming the disk to a Workbench 1.0 version.

Nothing for it but to go try. Read on.

Amiga 1000 - Workbench 1.0 with ABasiC.

Some original auction images of my first A1000
from over 20 years ago. In the same folder.

The kick 1.0 and wb 1.0 were in a repository
drawer on an external drive for the Amiga 1060.

I already had a working stand-alone disk for
the ABasiC software.

Workbench 1.0 booted up using the emulator/
There should be only 'Notepad' in Utilities.

The Startup-Sequence confirms Version 1.00.

This is the 'Extras' disk for Version 1.1.
I do not have one for 1.0. So let's make one.

The contents of the 'Extras' disk confirms
the version of BASIC as AmigaBASIC. This needs
to be replaced with ABasiC.

However my stand-alone ABasiC disk has all
these additional support files and drawers.
So will it work on the disk if I copy over
ABasic but without these specific files?

Only one way to find out.

Note I am currently using an Amiga 1200
Workbench and DOpus on the emulator. My
next task was to copy ABasic into RAM. When
doing file management always use DOpus.

Next up delete AmigaBASIC from the 'Extras'
disk and copy over ABasiC from RAM.

I decided to leave the Tfiles, though not
necessary. I also kept the Amiga Tutor.
Given the few months between release of 1.0
and 1.1 I doubt they commissioned MindScape
to create a whole new version. So I assume
they are the same.

To 'KICK' on the emulator I need a ROM.
The Amiga 1000 has its ROM on disk so
for the purposes of the exercise I used a
1.3 Amiga 500 ROM. Close enough.

Time to boot into Workbench 1.0. 'Scooby time'
as we go back... way back.

Release relates to the A500 emulator config
but the key point is the Workbench Version 1.00.

Again ignore the Workbench release 1.2 and
the massive memory allocation at the header.

This is Version 1.0 with just Notepad in
the Utilities drawer.

There would have been an 'X' when moving
icons but that loads in from the ROM.

This is Version 1.1 with the Calculator
in Utilities and IconEd in System. Both
are not present with 1.0.

OK time to fire up ABasiC from my 'codged'
'Extras' disk, and will it work using only
the original Workbench 1.0 disk...

Well did it ?

I never doubted it would work.

Took me a while to get use to the quotation
and 'at' key being in reverse locations.

But, I can confirm ABasic works.

So there we have it an 'Extras' disk for 1.0.

One last thing to do is check the Tutor.

.. if you didn't know this is an Amiga 1000.
and not an A1000. At the time of launch there
only was one Amiga... an Amiga 1000. Numbers
only became a thing with the release of new models.

And I still learn something new even after
all these years.

Note that ABasic won't work on later Amiga
OS' . If you try to boot you get a yellow guru.

ABasiC - Sadly very shortlived
