ScuzzBlog: Diaries June 2026 Entry 3rd June 2026: Post 1: Windows PCs - Why bother? Windows PCs - Why bother? Back to the workshop .... I was mucking around with Kimberly one of my XP machines and the thing locked up when I renamed a folder using Thumbs. The hard drive entered a lengthy validation process but eventually came to its senses. The machine then fired up OK but it is a warning sign that the drive is failing. There are a number of tricks to keeping it alive but sensibly I need to check my back-ups and ready a fresh drive. Trouble with XP is the MS validation process so maybe a simple swap out to Windows 98. For me 98 is always better. XP was always internet reliant unlike Windows 98 and I prefer 98. So why bother with the tin boxes. Dunno.. Sometimes its fun to just watch them struggle and then at the death fix the buggas. Makes me feel godlike. Its not like its hard to fix them. After all they are just tin boxes. Nothing important. Each machine tends to use the original CRTs and you are minded to record what cards you have and which connectors to use. Everything is wired and so you need plugs a plenty and enjoy the trip hazards of trailing Ethernet cables. Nothing like the sound of a degaussing tool punching in as Windows starts and the flickers of port lights as it finds it way onto your network. I sat with tea and toast as Kimberly came alive today and before long I was back threading through my archives and playing with the installed software. Those that read these blogs are aware of my passion to keep kit alive. I never really give up on anything. So if I have a problem then that in itself is turned into a form of entertainment. With the summer turning the corner I tend to spend all my time in the seclusion of the workshop. It is a different experience. For me I prefer the workshop. So for now at least the tin boxes can share the space with the true masters of my world..... THE AMIGAS. Happy days! If you're not having them you are doing fun wrong. Windows PCs - Why bother?
