Amiga Format Backstage - Its a rare thing.
I was doing a bit of late spring cleaning in the disk room putting
away disks, magazines and games that I have had out over the
winter season, and I was thumbing through my subscribers disks for
Amiga Format. What I tend to do is grab a fist full and check that
they are still working OK. I copied over disks 49 to 55 and then
stuck them in the emulator. All was fine.
If you have been lucky enough to acquire an Amiga Format magazine
and discovered inside a thin document titled Backstage then you
have become a rare owner of a subscribers magazine. Between the
issues 49 and 127 Amiga Format rewarded their subscribers to the
magazine with not only a special subscribers disk but also an extra
mini mag called Backstage.
These mini mags and actual disks have become very rare indeed. Most
of the Backstage mags were probably discarded in the day as they
were a little more than a pamphlet. There wasn't much to the mag
and the disks appeared to be additional stuff they couldn't find
space for on the actual cover disks. None the less they are an
important aspect of the Amiga Format magazine and as such for a
collector a much sought after document. Trust me they are rare.
You can download the disks from EAB Magazine Rack, though a number
of them have no label image. For my part of the 78 disks created I
am short a dozen, mostly toward the end. I sense subscribers were
getting a bit short at the latter stages given the lack of news
and the general thin nature of the magazine.
It is certainly worth keeping a collection of the subscribers
'Superdisks' just for old times sake and if you spot one get a
copy of 'Backstage' plus the magazine if you can. The tiny magazine
does represent a period of Amiga history when end users were still
actively using their kit. The discussions were always helpful and
informative and were written in the 'here and now' and not as is
the case today as a faded memory.
