Entry 17th June 2026: Post 1: Amiga 1200 - Poor Spike took a tumble.
Amiga 1200 - Poor Spike took a tumble.
I spent a good while today tidying up the workshop and putting
stuff away. I was all prepared to take some celebratory picks of
Spike when disaster struck. The internal hard drive had fallen over.
This machine gets used a lot cus it is one of my main sources for
Amiga files. With ZIP and CD it gives me a mass of options in terms
of media for retrieval purposes.
Anyhoo .. I first have to connect the ZIP and external drives and
plug in the monitor and then boot the main computer. Sadly today
all I got was a high pitched squeak which indicates the worst kind
of failure. Try as I might she was unresponsive.
So desperate probs calls on desperate measures so I tried the old
freezer trick but that didn't work. I even tapped the thing upside
down with the screwdriver. I was so frustrated. There really isn't
anything on the drive other than the OS cus the data is on the
external SCSI. All the same I need the drive working.
The drive came here in 2004 and the computer has been in constant
use since that time. The drive is probably half a dozen plus years
older than that being just 450MB a pretty common size for the
Amiga back in 1995. So you can do the maths. The problem now is
tracking down another. Did use to be quite easy but things have
changed this last couple of years. Never mind.
I will have to mothball the machine for now until I can find a
hard drive. Once I have one it will take very little time to get
the A1200 back up and running.
Sad day really. I sat in the workshop till it got dark trying to
coax the drive back into life. Sadly all I got was a boot off the
3.1 floppy disk. I was begging the hard drive to return.
Onwards. Been here before.
PS Thankfully I have a full backup of Spike on ZIP. I have checked
the ZIP and already copied it to another Amiga 1200. I have both the
Workbench and Work partition.
