Entry 22nd March 2020: Post 01: Dune - Amiga Game - Old Spice.

Dune - Amiga Game - Old Spice.

Do you ever feel guilty about not ever like ever playing, reading
or watching a classic game, book or film. Dune is one of those
stories that I just decided not to dabble in. I did play the very
opening section of the game, and I have watched various extracts
from the film. Sadly the title of this film conjured up all kinds
of images that rubbed me up the wrong way. Would have been the
same if were set say in a water world. Sand and water just don't
cut it with me and so I never played this game.

Over the years I have collected various disks and boxes. The original
is in deep plastic tub territory and so will not be featured today.
I think where the game suffered most was from not having a playable
demo in any of the popular rags of the day. Only disk I can find
is a Dune editor from Amiga Format.

I do know of folk that played and loved the game. I was often
tempted to watch the film or try to understand its plot. Never did
happen and so Dune and Dune II will probably stay in their boxes.

Dune was released in 1992 as an adventure and strategy style of
game and was based on Frank Herbert's science fiction novel. The
game has an economic and military strategy with the base purpose
of driving the Harkonnen from Planet Dune. And then there is the
spice extraction. Interesting !

The game followed the film by David Lynch which was a kinda hit,
I think, no idea. I seem to recall Sting being in it.

Anyhoo that is about it really, other than in addition to the
original game they made another called Dune II, which was equally
ignored by me. From the multitude of copied disks that I have
for this game it looks as though it was popular. Maybe some day
when I get tired of watching paint dry I may give it a shot. For
now I give you some pretty pictures and articles from various
magazines of the day. I was going to fire up the game but I got
distracted.

He who controls the spice ... controls the universe

Behold the planet Arrakis, known as Dune - Land of sand and home
of the spice Melange. The spice controls the empire. Whoever
controls Dune controls the spice.

The Emperor has proposed a challenge ' The house that produces
the most spice will control Dune, there are no territories ..
and no rules of engagement ..

Blah blah and only one house will prevail.

Seriously I recall being in the Amiga game shop and reading the
box and just put it back on the shelf. How is that interesting.
Saying that the game does have over one MB of digitised sound
effects. So of the five disks one is just noises. Whatever.
