Entry 4th March 2022: Post 1: AUI - A world first ! Amiga CD!

AUI - A world first ! Amiga CD!

Having just acquired my Amiga 1200 in 1993 I was keen to savour
some of the goodies on offer through the various magazines. I had
purchased PowerBase in January 1994 and noticed that AUI were
giving out a copy of SuperBase on their March/April copy of the
magazine. Maybe a little optimistic, but I shelled out the three
pounds seventy five for the magazine which also came the a CD.
I hadn't realised at the time that this was possibly the very
first CD included with an Amiga magazine.

AUI had obviously decided to feed the new CD32 users with a CD
magazine and so for three editions, AUI produced both a disk
based version and a CD based version. These were for March /
April, May and July. There were but three CD discs issued and
then they stopped producing the two versions and so no more
CDs.

Because of this there are two versions of the magazine to find
if you are a collector for each of these periods. Also the CD
came with one cover disk, and the disk version two.

I have to say I was amazed by the content on these CDs. There
are four great music tracks on the CD plus samples, art work,
animations, free PD games and reviews etc. AUI had packed the
disc with loads of stuff. Sadly in the day I did not have the
CD-ROM so I never did enjoy the disc until much later.

My only reward for getting the magazine was to review SuperBase
which I did choose to buy. I was keen to set up a DataBase for
my activities and although PowerBase was fine I found it a touch
over-complicated, as I did SuperBase... But one thing led to
another and through Softwood I discovered their Softwood File
data base software and I never used anything else after that.

So if you come across these three discs on your travels then
know that they came with Amiga User International. There really
is nothing on the discs that suggest which magazine they came
from. Odd that AUI did not celebrate their achievement more.
Maybe they had planned on creating a quite separate magazine
and then ditched the idea. I have no idea. My copy lay dormant
in the top drawer for years before I was able to enjoy it.

Anyhoo !! If you do get a copy bang it into your PC CD and enjoy
the tracks that autoplay as an unknown album.
