Entry 7th March 2022: Post 1: Amiga Workbench 1.3 - HDToolBox.

Amiga Workbench 1.3 - HDToolBox.

I will keep this short today as the subject really has been covered
any number of times from my blogs, so just search the index.

Two annoying aspects of Workbench 1.3 is the lack of hard drive
controller and the not being able to show all files from the main
menu. Each can be resolved by third party programs, but it is a
shame that they were not there from the getgo.

I get quite excited on the A500 with the A590 in the disk room as
there is a 'read-me' that refers to a ToolKit made by Commodore.
This is a red herring as the Toolkit is more a batch of helpful PD
applications. There are any number of toolkits for 1.3, but none
specifically for hard drive installation.

On the 1.3 machine in the disk room there are the remnants of the
install process which I had always assumed was part of the A590
install software. It's difficult to define precisely as there are
the FD files for the BASIC. So never sure.

The Amiga did produce the hard drive utilities for the A2090-4KIT
for the 2000HD and there are similar files for the A590 software.
I am pretty sure you could cobble something together using bits
of both to customise a kinda HDToolBox.

The GVP Install disk or Faaastprep comes in a number of flavours
and I would steer well clear of the early version. The one that
is fully automated is the better deal that came with the Series II
on the A2000. The earlier version is a real pig to work with.

Once you get to the latter OS versions post 2.1 you really are way
better off using the HDToolBox that comes with the OS. The GVP
software has installs for the latter Workbench' but really, the
Commodore product serves very well.

For me when you have an A590 you really need a ROM switcher and
the ability to use those Commodore HDToolBox tools that come with
the Workbench. What I do is do all the format work and volume
creation using 2.1 [ 2.04 ] and then flip the switcher and simply
copy the 1.3 to the Workbench partition. Easy peasy.

Just a tip if you plan on staying 1.3 side, you need to get a good
book on AmigaDOS and research the SHELL and get a good file manager.
Otherwise it can get a little tricky working with files.

Anyway, I kinda failed to find a specific HDToolBox for 1.3 so I
created my own. ... As you do !! Works fine. There is always a
way round things with the Amiga.

I'm off now, I have the very last part of Yorha 2B to complete as
I am just about to go into the towers. Fast and furious with A2.

Bye.
