ScuzzBlog: Diaries March 2023

Entry 7th March 2023: Post 1: Popular Computing Weekly - 1987.

Popular Computing Weekly - 1987.

1987 was a busy year for computing what with the Amiga launching
the Amiga 500, Atari posting big profits and Alan Sugar riding
high a year on after acquiring Sinclair. For me I had just moved
house and bought an Amstrad PCW9512 as a dedicated word processor
to aid me with my architecture. All was well in the world I have
to say.

I read with interest posts on forums from those commenting on the
history and times of computing. Much is blurred by time and you
sense a weird generalising of facts, and an over simplified view
of things. If you want to get a good handle on how things were
in the day look no further than the publications from the period.
I was a keen reader of Popular Computing from its early years. It
was so frequent in release and littered with news items.

This month I found a few that I didn't have of the magazine and
was doubly pleased to get them as they featured the three big guns
of the time, what with Amiga, Atari and Amstrad all doing well. I
particularly liked the battle stance of Amiga v Atari which rang
out very loud in the day. I also was very interested in the words
of Alan Sugar from the actual day.

It is so important to get a balanced understanding of facts before
making generalisations. So many times I have seen a comment repeated
to the point of becoming a truth. Time blurs the edges and renders
the truth in often a disjointed way. So if you are keen to fully
appreciate the world of home computers then grab a few older
publications and read first hand the words as they were written at
the time.

Just a side note and that is to comment on how wonderful it was in
the day to have so many shows to attend. In March and April you
could go to the Electron and BBC Micro Show, Dragon Computer Show
and the Atari Show. If only I had a time machine.
