ScuzzBlog: Diaries November 2018

Entry 29th November 2018: Post 01: Diablo

Diablo

Frequent flyers on the blog will know that I am a keen gamer. My
most favoured game is World of Warcraft as created by Blizzard.
I have been a great fan of their work long before Warcraft came to
the for. Years past I played Diablo. Interestingly I preferred
Record of Lodoss War on the Dreamcast which was in essence the
very same type of game.

Diablo is a three dimensional world where you view events from
above and then guide your character through various locations
to solve mysteries, fight mobs and gather loot and upgrade so
you can fight even tougher mobs. Usual stuff. Been playing this
kind of game since I first encountered Dungeons and Dragons on
the board games. Ishar on the Amiga was very similar.

I progressed to Diablo II which I was lucky enough to get a copy
for the PC and really enjoyed it. The game hadn't changed a bit
and was still a hoot and a half to play.

Fast forward to now and I play Diablo III from my Blizzard App
on the Win7 machine. It still retains all the basic qualities
of the first game and has become a little bit of a classic game.

The point of the post is that at Blizzcon this year, Blizzard
dropped the bombshell that the game is going mobile. It will be
playable using a phone. This kinda has scuppered any further
progression for me with the game as I don't have a phone. Worse
is that I can't see any way of playing the game without dumbing
it down for use with fingers and thumbs.

My bigger concern is that Blizzard have announced they are working
on more mobile titles and I am troubled that my beloved Warcraft
may go over to the phone. Sadly the PC is in decline and I guess
they have to adapt or fail. Bit of a catch 22 for me as I have no
intention of getting a mobile phone.

SONY announced that they are not going to attend the E3 next year
which suggests a delay in the release of the PS5. They appear to
be either shunning the show or just don't have anything new on offer.
I kinda resisted getting the PS4 when it came out cus of the need
for the yearly sub but had intended getting a PS5. I have regretted
not being able to play games like Nier Automata and the PS3 is about
to fall over. I was looking at the Switch but they are real expensive
for what they are.

And so Diablo III may just end its run. Being online if Blizzard
pull the plug there won't be any game. So I will have to regress
to Diablo II. Or not.. probably not. I still have Warcraft thank
goodness, but if the World of Warcraft moves on then I may just
have to get a PS4 after all.

Diablo II on Win 98.
