Entry 5th October 2019: Post 03: Amiga 600HD - Finally did it.

Amiga 600HD - Finally did it.

The last few days have seen me trying desperately to get an Amiga 600HD
fitted with a 60GB hard drive that I purchased all the way from China.
Yesterday I had all but given up cus of problems with the keyboard
and an issue trying to format the drives.

Having had the scare about the capacitors I cleaned the ribbon slot
to the keyboard but with no joy. Something very odd was going on and
in the end I sense there is a fracture on the ribbon cable itself
which in truth is very brittle.

I did have another keyboard, albeit a little faded and with one of the
keys missing. I decided to give that a try and see if I could at least
determine if it was the computer or keyboard. Turned out that the
computer is fine cus the keyboard worked from the get go no problem.
So I have a keyboard working minus the full stop.

Next up I pulled the Amiga 1200 that I installed the hard drive on
yesterday and given I could only quick format with OS3 and later I had
the notion of formatting the Workbench and installing the 2.05 OS onto
the drive on the 1200 and then moving it over.

In truth there was no need to format the drive. I simply deleted the
Workbench contents having booted the A1200 with the 2.05 disk. The
computer refused to install the OS though as it couldn't recognise
a Kickstart that in its day did not exist. So I simply copied the disk
contents plus the two others to the Workbench and renamed it to the
version 2.0. I rebooted and the computer fired up OS 2.05.

So it was a simple job then to move the hard drive over to the A600HD
and she worked a charm. I have all the keys available working less the
full stop and now have 4GB of 60GB available. I only use the first
4GB to keep under the drive limitations for the Amiga. All seems to
be working just fine.

I will keep an eye out for a replacement floppy drive and maybe another
keyboard. But for now the major challenge of getting an A600HD working
with a 2.5" internal drive is complete.

And before you ask ' no ' ... I don't use CF cards. They are silent and
man do I hate that in a computer.
