Entry 14th October 2021: ZORK I - 5.25" Give me a break.

ZORK I - 5.25" Give me a break.

I will keep this short and not so sweet. The year is 2021 and the
truth of the matter is that the Commodore 64 existed a very long
time ago. It may appear to some that in rejuvenating the older
kit you are going back in time, but quite seriously the age of
the discs cannot be reversed, even with 'Retrobriting'. Best you
can do is get newer versions recently created, or use some form
of emulation drive and disc.

And the point. Leave it out! It is not worth risking your drive
or your discs to keep using these older 5.25" discs. They are well
past their sell by date and should be stored somewhere safe and
kept for future generations to restore, when they have developed
more effective technology. Once the discs have been damaged it
just makes it harder to repair.

Most of these games are on the internet in one form or another.

I could go one step further and suggest the old 'breadbin' and
similar age kit should now be glass cased and mothballed. The
kit is just getting so old. In the future there are going to be
way better ways to restore these old machines without all the
hacking and scraping that goes on for the benefit of YouTube.

I broke my own rule today and played ZOOL-I. It was truly as bad
as I always remembered it to be. Time has moved on and although
there may be a fascination for older games, they really are not
that stimulating. Saving the disks and hardware is way more an
important challenge. So next time you see a 5.25" just say 'NO'.

One last thing and this relates to copied disks you may have.
These things are pretty lethal. They can not only render your
drive inoperable, but also knock out you alignment and make the
reading of other disks impossible. Never use an old copied disk
unless you have an effective disc head cleaner at your disposal.
Better still never use them. After all the years they will just
gunge up your read heads and create some real problems.

Here are a few of my 5.25" discs that I refuse to use now.
