Amiga 1200 - intermittent drive failure.
I'm not going to be too hard on poor Bryoni, especially as she
has been sitting around with this problem since 18th July 2024.
OK I'm still on the fun and games of the 'merry go round' that is
more like musical chairs I guess. Over the winter I became a bit
troubled that my favorite A1200 games machine was being left to
rot in the harsh climate of the workshop. Bit extreme but I did
decide to move the A1200 up into this room where she has sat ever
since. See the raft of blogs previous to this day. M'kay.
Enter the workshop replacement and Bryoni. This A1200 joined the
ranks in April 2007. She had a hard drive replacement in 2018 and
an accelerator fitted some time between then and now.
I 2024 I was doing my usual rounds checking all the dormant
computers and discovered Bryoni had developed a nasty cough in
the form of a high pitched ping and a failure to boot. This has
been a real Basil Fawlty kinda situation where I threatened poor
Bryoni with a damn good thrashing and like magic she always then
sprang back into life.
Fast forward to now and over the last few weeks poor Bryoni's
cough has been getting worse so I decided to take her onto the
bench. I hooked up the Samsung monitor and set too diagnosing
the problem.
Sure enough the first boot and she pinged and didn't boot. Then
I opened the computer and she is right as ninepence. And she
continued to run perfectly every time I switched her on.
I removed the ribbon completely. Checked the interface. Tried
to screw the drive ... ooh er !! Down to the cradle, but sadly
none of the screws aligned. I found a rubber for extra protection.
Rubber band that is. It'll do. Wont last but hey. Took Bryoni
out for lunch and then scratched my head as to what to do.
The truth is I have an intermittant fault on a 40GB 2.5 inch
drive that I acquired from China for five quid in 2018. What am
I going to do. All I have to do is lift the top case and do
nothing and she fires up. Not even a tap on the case. So I will
leave the case cover unscrewed and if I have the urge to screw
Bryoni I'll just keep the screws close by.
The computer has a Viper Turbo 1230LC and 8MB RAM. Workbench
3.0 . The computer sits attached to the Microvitec and takes pride
of place as my games machine. Going now.
I have created two very boring videos of Bryoni and her drive failure.
