ScuzzBlog: Diaries September 2021

Entry 18th September 2021: Post 1: Walkman recharge - Less isn't more. Trust me.

Walkman recharge - Less isn't more. Trust me.

At times during these blogs you will find me being pretty derogatory
about Apple and Steve Jobs. And the reason is simple. I don't hold
to the view that less is more. I was fed that kinda crap whilst at
college at the school of architecture in Birmingham. It was that
kind of nonsense thinking that gave us The Villa Savoye or the Unite
d'habitation in Berlin. You just have to look at the way Jobs
dressed to see what angle he had on design.

Less is not more. In the eyes of Jobs he would have discarded all
the physical and been quite content having a brain implant that
transmitted data to your senses from a cloud on high, with all
stored data remotely accessed. He spent a lifetime removing more
and more from computers to a point where today all you need is a
bloody mobile phone. A 5" slab of shiny thin glass, plastic and
silvered metal as replacement for all your gadgets. Me I don't
hold that view and I don't own a mobile phone.

I wouldn't swap any of what I have acquired over the years for a
pair of Google goggles. No way. For me the joy is in the having
and holding. The senses are a wash with my possessions, they instil
in me more than the data they contain. They are an extension of me
and they are my pride and joy. For the most part they have no
connectivity with the internet. They do not require an internet
connection to bring them to life. They stand aloof from the Jobs
idealistic world of the cloud. They are independent, free and most
important are mine to do with what I want.

And so on the bench today as I set to replacing the battery on
the Walkman I assembled my mobile phone, or what others view as
essentials for their wafer thin iCrap. Sorry.

If you need explanation then I will 'explain'.

Walkman recharge - Less isn't more.

My assembled gadgets for reference.

Aiwa cassette player with graphical equaliser.
This little baby has travelled with me around
the world and still serves me today.

I have always purchased the real thing when
it has come to media. So my tapes are originals
and I have shelves of the things.

I purchased the last cassette Walkman made by
SONY just to make sure I always had one.

The radio on this is incredible and it runs
on one AA battery. Rechargeable.

The Walkman mini disc player.. I'll come onto that.

My Walkman MP3/MP4 etc player with the lovely
Clara Veiga welcoming me in.

Has nearly all my CD collection. About 50%.

Mini disc marvels. Duplicate quality of
the original and all legal as copies.

How can anyone not love mini discs.
Just follow the white rabbit.. Matrix.

In the Feb of 1977 I came home late from
the pub and watched the Old Grey with a
feature on Fleetwood Mac and a new album
called Rumours. I was well versed with
Fleetwood growing up with Albatross and
Oh Well.. but this was different. So I
ventured to my local record steward and bought
the album. Which I still play. And now I also
have the CD.

So why not download the iTune or watch YouTube?
I can't answer that question for you. Cus I am
from another world where less isn't more.

Rumours on CD and tape and mini disc.

The HP IPAQ a gift from work.

Worked fine once I took the telephone
SIMM card out of it.

The Olympus Digital Voice Recorder.

Never leaves my side. I log all my thoughts
and transfer them to computer into a folder
called ' Sounds like me '. Every day I record
my activities and thoughts in date order.

My world and my life in audio.

One of two cameras I use . The other is
the one taking these images. A Canon G7.

I would still prefer my Nikon and traditional
film. But with the amount of pictures I take
and the need to upload, it's not really practical.

You would be amazed at the quality of video.
I watch video every single day. And I mean
every single day. I have two video recorder
players and enough video to stock an old style
corner shop video library.

I love the video cassette boxes,
artwork and cassette.

I do tend to collect the latest blockbusters
which sadly are getting fewer and far between.
I don't download films. I have so little time
to spare I just haven't got a window to watch
films. This crap was 2.5 hours long and sadly
it was a real bad film. No idea why it had to
be filmed in 1984... Cost them $200 million.
I could have told them 1984 was a boring year.

I made the mistake of watching Endgame before
Infinity Wars. So now I have the latter new
and sealed ready to watch.. when I can get a moment.

Again I have to have the originals. I like the
library of DVDs at my disposal so I can watch
what I want, when I want on what I want. All DVD.

OK so why the blog today?

I needed to install and charge a new battery
for the Walkman. The other had stopped charging
This is a minidisc player/recorder.

Man do I love the Walkman. It just makes me
go all tingly every time I twiddle its knob. Ooh er !!

How can anyone not love these things.

Turned out there wasn't anything wrong
with the old battery. I just needed to
clean the top connector.

OK I'm done. All charged up and good
for another decade. I'm never likely ever
going to change my view on 'more is more'.
I do not prescribe to a world dominated by
tiny flat screens reliant on the internet. And
I wouldn't be seen dead in a turtle neck. Even
Wozniak struggled with that dress statement.

I like my stuff. I like gadgets. I enjoy keeping
all of this alive. It's what keeps me alive so I
guess it's doing me a big favour. You are allowed
to look up once in a while from that bloody telephone.
Go get yourself some vinyl and ' Break the Chain '.
