Entry 03rd September 2022: Post 1: NVIDIA Code 43 - Breaking my own rules.

NVIDIA Code 43 - Breaking my own rules.

I have a general rule here in the summer and that is when the temp
rises to above 27/80 degrees I switch the computers off. Shame I
didn't adhere to my rule on the 24th July 2022, cus as the temp
rose that dreadful day I lost my graphics card. The screen became
entangled in a mess of horizontal lines and the Win 7 computer
threw up the message ' Windows has stopped this device because
it has reported problems (Code 43)'.

Nothing for it but to replace the NVIDIA graphics card which is
what I did.

The computer is my beloved HP Pavilion Elite HPE i7 64bit. She has
sat below this desk un-moved since February 2011. The pictures I
show here are the first taken of her on the bench and the first
time she has moved down the stairs since Feb 2011. She is what I
am happy to call a 'wonder machine' and is simply the best computer
I have ever owned. In all the years I have had her she has never
locked up. Sadly the NVIDIA has failed twice, but in each instance
it wasn't the main machine or OS that was at fault. Win7 is the
last OS from Microsoft that I have any respect for, and is still
my preferred weapon of choice. Even without the updates.

Some weeks before the failure of the card I had a 'whiff' of fishy
capacitor smell up here and was troubled then by a possible failure.
When I removed the card I noted a discharge on the PCB adjacent by
the DVi connector. Fortunately the pass through still worked and
I was able to see a crude version of the OS in super low res with
a very fractured image.

The first thing I did was order both a replacement card and 3TB
hard drive. I spent the first week backing up my main drive. This
took a good while as I was reluctant to use the computer over the
27 degree mark. Having done that I simply swapped the cards.

She fired up no problem and I got the all clear from the Device
Manager. Phew ! What a relief. I had a problem with a faint yellow
tint to displayed images in Photoshop and discovered a bad display
profile following the incident. I needed to activate the SRGB
IEC61966-2.1 profile and all was fixed. Since then no issues.

This is the second time the graphics card has failed. Other than
that in the 11 years she has been running I have never had any
problems. Like I say a truly magical computer. They just don't
get any better. I do own a DeLL Win10 machine which I bought new
for 800 quid in 2017 but sadly Win10 is seriously crap and I
just can't use the thing. I am never sure with Win10 just who is
supposed to be in charge, me or it. I think most folk tolerate
Win10 cus they have mobile phones and are use to the intrusions
the system makes. Me I like my OS to behave and shut up for the
most part and be quiet. Win7 does that thankfully.

Anyhoo the moral of that story is don't use Win10... er or sorry,
never use a computer for any length of time when the room temp is
above 80 degrees F or 27 degrees C.... or that first thing, or both.
I seriously have only just started using this computer again this
week for any length of time. The PS4 hasn't been switched on since
the beginning of July. Its just not worth the risk.

Pencil and paper is just fine and can be used safely in any temp.
I got through three boxes of 12 4B pencils/box plus two soft
rubbers this summer. At times I had two scutters blasting me in
the face as I fought the bloody Death Star. I so hate the thing.
I now have the upstairs back in service so I can get on with
my life again. Thankfully.

NVIDIA Code 43 - Breaking my own rules.

Replacement was thirty quid off Ebay.

No nasty marks by the DVi.
