ScuzzBlog: Diaries September 2022

Entry 08th September 2022: Post 1: Home Accounts - Digita International.

Home Accounts - Digita International.

Software title number two from Digita International that I was
lucky enough to secure this last week or so. Today we have the
very wonderful Home Accounts. I have checked to see if the disk
is working and sure enough it is fine. For my efforts I was able
to snag the plastic folder case, the manual and the disk. So all
good I have to say.

In respect of what the software does, well that is less clear. In
the day the computer was beginning to become a household tool for
general finance and money matters. From the little collection I
acquired, of which there is one more, you can see that the owner
in 1988/89 was using the Amiga to plan out his/her finances. I'm
sure the software did little more than show what I guess they
already knew. I have never found such applications very useful.

For my part I have a simple notepad sheet on my desktop based on
a 'INS and OUTS' format and have predictive numbers which I
overwrite when I receive details from the bank. I keep a good
record of what my financial responsibilities are and just keep
the log ongoing on a month in month out basis. Been doing it for
like ever so I have a very good handle on my finances.

1988 was a year when the storm clouds were beginning to gather in
the UK. The housing market was about to take a tumble and good old
Mrs Thatcher was keen to declare war on Europe again with her
stance on monetary union. Then she discovered her chancellor had
been ghosting the German currency all along. There was a falling
out, the country rebelled against the poll tax and just as is the
case very often here, a very popular leader was dumped in favour
of a grey dreary boring new leader. And so we had the various
gangs of blues fighting the Maastricht Treaty which led to the UK
pulling out of the monetary union. But only after interest rates
rocketed to 15% and the pound crumbled. Sound familiar.

Sadly the architectural practices in the region collapsed along
with many building organisations and we had a grey cloud descend
upon us until the mid 90s. Not a good time. But then when I was
being taught economics at college we were always taught the laws
of 'Trade Cycles' something that is ignored these days.

Anyhoo that was that... Yet another Home Accounts title tomorrow.
