ScuzzBlog: Diaries September 2022

Entry 13th September 2022: Post 1: MFC - Make-up Football Clubs 1969.

MFC - Make-up Football Clubs 1969.

This is an odd subject to be honest, given that it was originally
intended as just a couple of pictures as an intro to a blog I am
doing tomorrow. And then I got a bit carried away. So humour me.

My first image here is of the oldest thing I have ever received
and it's my birthday card from my gran and grandad when I was 1.
Just to show that I was collecting from a very early age. It was
in amongst the MFC stuff and made me chuckle.

The second image is of a secret code that I created to send to my
fellow members of the SVS or Secret Visual Society during my summer
breaks at school. Just something I was idling away at during the
school summer break.

OK to the main topic. My mother enjoyed her cancer coupon each
week which involved her buying a coupon along with a string of
numbers which she gambled on a roulette wheel. The numbers she
could enter on the roulette wheel were created by football results
from what was then division one through to four. The scores from
actual games threw up a number and those numbers corresponded to
numbers on a paper roulette wheel on the coupon. My dad would
watch the wrestling on a Saturday afternoon and afterwards I would
sit at the football tele-prompt announcing the scores from my moms
given teams. The one team that always came up trumps for mom was
Queens Park Rangers. Consequently from around 1966 when QPR faced
West Brom in the league cup and won, I started supporting them. This
was no mean feat as QPR were in the then third division and West
Brom in the first.

Anyhoo this was quite exciting till the football season ended and
then it lost its spark as mom resorted to the Australian league
which wasn't anything like as much fun.

I then had this brilliant idea to create my very own football
league. And so MFC or Make-up Football was born. I created all
the teams, their names, their players and manager. Designed all
the kits and emblems and played out the games using a dice.
I then reviewed the games and even wrote up my own report of
the games with drawn images. This extended into cups and even
international teams and competitions. There was even a map of
where all the teams resided.

I have a very large journal somewhere with way more detail and a
full log of all the results. I played MFC for three years before
I eventually had to give up and leave school and go to work. Sadly
no more six week summer breaks.

The league evolved into a Subbuteo mini league playing five a
side with my mates from school and which I will discuss further
tomorrow. Suffice to say I liked my football.

My supported team is Queens Park Rangers which I have followed
since 1966. However the teams I actually went to see were either
Wolves or Walsall given that I came from Walsall originally. I was
very keen in the day collecting all the football cards and any
pictures I could get my hands on.

I was quite amazed by this programme from an England international
to see adverts for drink and cigarettes. Looks most peculiar.

When I wasn't mucking around with football, Matchbox, Lego and or
Airfix soldiers and the like I was following the Apollo missions.
There didn't seem to be a month in those days that there wasn't
some Apollo mission underway. You may recall the episode of the
Big Bang where Howard had screwed up the International Space
Station's toilet. Surprisingly Apollo 14 had an issue with the
toilet. This was the first mission following the ill fated Apollo
13 moon mission. Quite a stressful one that.

Happy days.

Anyway... sorry to bore you with that, but then it's my blog so I
can feature what I want. Tough.
