Project Walker - Plus mystery keyboard.
There was a discussion over on one of the Amiga forums about the
failed 'Project Walker' from CeBIT '96 and I thought I would show
the article from CUAmiga which features the beast. This was an
Amiga Technologies project using a 60EC030 complete with hard drive,
floppy and CD. It was being promoted as a low end model and was
to be driven by OS3.2.
Personally by this stage of the Amiga history line I had started
to become a little disillusioned given the lack of new product
for the Amiga. A lot of words but with nothing to show for it. In
truth this was to be the pattern of activity for the Amiga over
the coming years, so projects like The Walker are consigned to
the Amiga 'what if' drawer along so many false hopes.
I do have a CDTV keyboard that would be ideally suited to this
Walker computer. It is a very strange beast given that unlike the
normal black keys for the CDTV keyboard it has white or ivory keys.
The keyboard is for the CDTV as it has one pin missing from the
connector. The ivory keys do not appear as a late replacement as
the silk sheen for the keys is the same as the keyboard itself. I
have never seen a CDTV keyboard with white keys. Probably a bodge
by Commodore due to shortages of black keyboards. Who knows?
One last comment... 'The Walker' was wrong on so many levels. None
more so than the restrictive shape that limited internals and usage
of a flat surface to place stuff on. It just doesn't sit well on
the desk. Looks more like an old radio. Kinda reflects a company
out of touch. The cheaper option would be an A1200 docking station
not unlike the Interface 1 for the Spectrum. Whacky I know but the
Amiga 1200 needed more drive capacity and CD functionality plus
maybe even ZIP plus graphics and modem. A tray at the back that
plugged in would also serve to sit the monitor. They would have
been better approaching 'Checkmate' for a solution.
