Entry 9th September 2026: Post 1: Tetris - Underground PD titles.

Tetris - Underground PD titles.

Recently someone asked on the forum if they recall a PD version
of the game Tetris which featured some rubbish clearing activities
and lights going out. I must confess it did not ring any bells with
me, so nothing for it but to pull the Tetris disk box and have a
look through.

Eventually I did find the likely candidate in the form of TETREN
and sure enough the guy confirmed as much. Never played it before
and not sure I ever will again.

As you would expect the game of Tetris was ravaged by those that
liked to mimic games and push them out across the PD world. Most
were simple copies with embellished interfaces. There were some
quite interesting exceptions where the Tetris pieces were broken
down into individual components that could be modified and give
additional significance.

I'm sure I have more Tetris games. Trouble is they changed the
names and listed them with other PD titles so unless I specifically
located a Tetris style game on a disk it probably never made the
index listing so I would never know it was there. My search is
structured around the disk title.

Anyhoo the name of the bonkers game of Tetris that forces players
to play in the dark is TETREN written by Andrew Whiteley. You can
download the PD games from Aminet. For those wanting to check out
my collection I have provided downloads for your amusement. Be
aware that some disks only work with certain Workbench versions.
Some need the 1MB memory. Some hate Workbench 3.0. Some need AGA.
Some need the original manual for the password. One I couldn't
get to work. I copied it from two different disks but neither worked.
I was going to try again but to be honest by end of play I had had
enough of Tetris.

Tetris is a Russian video game created by Alexey Pajitnov who was
given the challenge as a software engineer to bring down western
society by infecting computers with a game so addictive that users
would ignore the fact that the game was 'alf inching trade secrets.
I can't back any of that up as its a blatant fib. What is very
interesting is that it was created in Pascal for an Elektronika 60
which is an amazing bit of kit that I sense is somewhat rare.
Not likely to get one into the collection I fear. How the game was
licensed to Microsoft is nothing short of a computer miracle.

Anyhoo here are 12 PD disks obtained legitimately of various versions.
Heads up that if you don't enter/edit the player name in Tetren you
will never enter the game. The selection may bounce around randomly.
Depends which Workbench you are using.
