Atari Portfolio - Memory battery wrong way round.
The other day I showed how to fit main batteries to the Atari
Portfolio. I did not show how to fit the memory card battery. I
did show some images from a previous blog. What I failed to say
was that the images in the earlier blog actually showed the card
battery the wrong way round. I have since added notes to that
blog. What I also failed to mention was the battery in the card
was actually dead. I decided to buy a new battery.
First up the battery enclosure on the memory card is opened by
releasing a small clip to the left edge. I have seen so many vids
advising to use a pair of grips to pull it out. There is no need
to force the drawer, it opens freely by simply pressing the clip.
Next up the plus on the battery should be on the underside face
down. On the underside of the holder there is even imprinted
into the plastic a '+' sign telling you which way round to place
the battery.
I purchased the CR2016 batteries which expire in 2034. Although I
placed the other battery in 2017, it expired in 2023.
Apology... The sun was streaming into the kitchen today and I
struggle to locate a good place for the Portfolio screen to take
a pic. I also have to have a light as closely as possible above.
Because I was doing a balancing act with a board to obscure the
sun I had to use the main light to show the screen. This sadly
appeared in the pics and I had to simply cut it out leaving a
blank circle. Annoying but hey. It is really tricky taking pics
of these screens.
OK battery installed with plus face down and I first had to format
the drive. Next I created a file in the file manager and saved it.
I then switched the machine off. This time no smoke and mirrors
just the simple keypress to activate the Portfolio and like magic
the file on the a drive is still in existence. Honestly.
I am so pleased. I spent a little time with DIP-DOS though sadly I
got bored , as I always do with DOS.
There you go, a whole blog just to say battery plus face down.
