Entry 24th September 2026: Post 1: Art Effect - Not what I had in mind.
Art Effect - Not what I had in mind.
I had set off this morning thinking I would be enjoying the
delights of Ace Basic until I realised I had already covered the
software in a blog a couple of years ago. So I grabbed the next
disk in the pack and decided to give Art Effect a go.
I was a little suspicious of the software given it was only a
demo and seemed to make reference to more powerful machines. In
the latter period of the nineties it seemed that most that had
stayed with the platform were ready to tower their Amiga's so
they could take advantage of graphic and sound cards etc.
Not to be deterred but airing on the cautious I decided to check
the disc contents from the CD first just to be sure it was working.
I didn't want to scan the magazine pages and copy the floppy if
it was a bit of a damp Squibb.
My caution proved well founded as the actual software just didn't
want to play ball. The actual installation was incredibly convoluted
needing me to create a floppy then unpack onto the machine and then
install to the hard drive. For some reason the New Installer wasn't
working. I used a another of my 1200 configs and bulldozed my way
into the software. I chose high res PAL but the software seemed
to give me low res NTSC. I decided to open a low res image to suit
and the interface was all over the shop. None of the wording was
in the dialogue buttons and the OK button to accept a file option
was off the interface at the base. It was a bit of a mess.
I'm sure it was me, but given that the software flips to demo mode
after ten steps and the contact for registering the program will
have long moved on I decided to call it quits. The sad truth for
the Amiga at this stage of its existence is that good software was
a little rare and I doubt with so few using the platform , creators
were just not going to make any return for their efforts.
By the way I did have the bgui.library installed on my emulator
version and that didn't make any difference. To give the software
credit it does look pretty impressive from the Amiga Format review
it just didn't like me.
Never mind.
I have included my blog on Ace BASIC for those that missed it
