Amiga timetravel - If I could go back in time.
I actually don't want for anything Amiga wise, I pretty well have
it all. But if I could go back to a specific moment and nab a new
machine what would it be? Obvious answer would be the most rare or
the most expensive. Putting that aside what machine do I currently
have that I wish I had a new one.
The answer is an A500 Plus, hell I would nab half a dozen if I knew
what I know now. First thing I would do is remove the batteries.
So why the A500 Plus? I love the sidecars for the A500 either the
A590 or GVP. And the 2.0 ROM running 2.04 offers the grey Workbench
that was really leaps and bounds above 1.3. It made preparing your
hard drive a doddle.
I would probably install a ROM switcher so I could run WB1.3. The
benefit is the 8A motherboard and the improved much fatter AGNUS
and the DENISE giving the Amiga Enhanced Chip Set status. It also
loads your trapdoor into Chip which is cool.
One bonus to getting a new Plus would be to avoid the different
shades to the case I have currently to my most treasured Plus. I
know the vanity thing shouldn't matter, but I have to say that
yesterday when I was checking over the machine I show below I
did long for a less hammered bottom tray and a more complete
machine. Having its original box and all the books would complete
the Plus. Sadly I will never know just how she came to be the
way she is with differing shades to the case.
Whilst on my time travels I would pick up the A590 and lovingly
cherish the mint boxes. I would also bag all the software I could
carry. Magic.
So why not an A600 or A2000. First the A600 comes with capacitor
scare and an all surface fixed motherboard. The thing is way too
small for its own good and only looks like an A1200 yet residing
in a half way house between A500 Plus and A1200. As for the 2000
I really don't like the big box and no matter how I improve the
machine it always feels clunky and slow. Quite difficult finding
a comfortable space on the desktop.
Although my A500 Plus machines for the most part have survived
the horror of the battery issue, it would be nice to have just
one that escaped completely. The A500 Plus was a most unlucky of
computers and deserved much better. It should have been released
a lot earlier and given a much longer life span. I never really
liked the machine at first but with time I have really grown to
love the computer. I actually leave my A500 Plus out for the
most part as I just value the things so much. Of all the Amiga
computers it is the least likely to survive in any number and
so glass casing this beauty is worth doing even if the motherboard
has been eaten away by the dreaded battery.
For me the A500 Plus is a real collectors computer and if you do
have one, I would look after it. Cus there aint many about. Cus
I went back in time and nabbed them all.... WAKE UP !! WAKE UP!!
Oh dear I fell asleep again.
